Darcy never makes a bad book. Her slow burns, creepy ambience and plot twists are always fantastic. This one was a nice, short read that packed a punch at the end. It was both spooky and sad. While I hated May and didn’t trust her from the beginning I also felt bad for her. It’s a very cozy thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat once the crazy starts to happen.

I wanted to read something spooky for Halloween time, so did a little research and my book club came up with this title to try. However, I'm very aggravated because this is obviously written for middle schoolers/preteens. I have no problem reading a middle school book, but not when this was advertised/marketed/catalogued as an adult horror book. It was perfectly fine so I feel a little badly about the one star, but then the author/publisher shouldn't have falsely forwarded this as for adult readers. I'm sure a 12-year old would have been enthralled and scared, so go shelve this in the children's section where it belongs.

I'd say the story itself was a 3.5, but I'm giving it that extra half for the short stories I didn't realize were at the back of the book! That was some surprise extra fun.

Another excellent book by Darcy Coates. While I've enjoyed some of her works more than others, I haven't come across one of her novels or novellas thus far that I haven't liked. This book, while not perfect the whole way through, was definitely an enjoyable read. The setting and atmosphere of the novel, as with all of her books that I've read so far, was brilliant. The forest and the lake added remained eery and foreboding throughout the entirety of the novel. I also think she did a great job with the various characters of the novel. The grandparents, May and Peter Folcroft, were written in a way that I really liked; while you immediately sensed that something was off about them, it wasn't overly apparent or in your face, and there as almost a sense of ambiguity about it. There were times in the novel where I questioned if maybe it was all a misunderstanding, or if they truly weren't up to anything.
The protagonists of the novel, Tara and Kyle, were also characters that I really liked. Darcy Coates has a really good grasp on writing interesting characters, and also does a great job with fleshing out relationships between characters. Once again, I thought she did a great job with that in this novel, and the siblings' relationship was something I really enjoyed reading about.
The only thing I feel was lacking was that some of the mystery elements of the novel were too predictable, and the way that Tara discovered these answers seemed a bit too convenient. Overall though, this was a very enjoyable read, and I would definitely recommend it.

I have enjoyed a number of books by Darney Coates but this is not one of them. Just not interesting.
