Another excellent haunted house tale from Darcy Coates. This one follows a pair of children whose mother has had a terrible accident and is hospitalized. Having nowhere else to go to they discover their long lost grandparents and are reunited as a family. But things are not as they seem at this idyllic mountain home. Twists and turns are a foot as we discover the mysteries of the Folcroft family.

This was an excellent read that left me wanting more. I love Darcy's haunted house tales the more I read of them. Luckily for me there are plenty to last me

3 Stars.

This was my first time reading Darcy Coates. The Folcroft Ghosts sounded really creepy and fun. Who doesn't love a good ghost story?!? Tara and Kyle end up staying with their grandparents that they've never met after their mother has an accident. They're both suspicious of the situation because their mother ran away when she was 17 and has no contact with her parents. The house is gigantic and creepy with locked rooms and strange noises. I was really hoping for more of a creepy factor and for the big reveals to have more bang.

This story contains 3 bonus short stories : Clockwork, Sub Basement, and Crypt. I would rate these stories as 3.5 stars. They were fun snippets with an ambiguous ending.

A special thank you to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press, and Darcy Coates for providing me with a reader copy.
slow-paced

This was one of the better books by this author. Some of the writing is clunky and weird but it was okay.

3.5 I liked the story and the characters...it just wasn't scary enough.

Tak ještě, že to bylo tak krátké, protože to bylo celkem zklamání. Těšila jsem se na příběh, kde hlavní aktéři měly být děti, ale bylo to slabé.

Although not specifically branded as such, The Folcroft Ghosts struck me as a story aimed at middle school kids. It's short--more a novelette than a full novel--there's no foul language, the scares are relatively mild, and the heroes are a plucky young sister and brother.

This is an easy read but by the end the experience felt a bit underwhelming. The brevity of the story, along with a curiously abrupt wrap-up at the end brought to mind a treatment for a half hour TV anthology series or perhaps an expanded short story. What's here is good, it's just that it all feels a bit thin and rushed, as if written with a short deadline.

I wasn't bothered by the ghosts not being particularly frightening, as the story is structured more as a mystery, with suspense ratcheting up not because of the ghosts, but due to the folksy homespun charm of the matronly grandmother morphing into some seriously questionable applications of the concepts of family and "love."

Overall, this is a solid if slight read that eschews big scares for lingering unease. It's a story that will likely be enjoyed even more by kids around age 12 or thereabouts.
