3 and a half stars.
I always have a love hate relationship with Sophie Kinsella books. They make me smile, while her protagonist often give me so much anxiety. This time Ava gave me less anxiety than others and I found many of the characters fun and likeable. Fun, escapist lit.

It felt like I was slogging through teenage angst, but with adults.
The last couple chapters were the best part of the book.

Not a fan of the cussing and premarital relations.

Reviewed from a library copy.
lighthearted

Harold is the best thing about this book!
slow-paced

If you are here thinking that you love sophie’s books so “why not start this one?” JUST DON’T.

* no spoilers on this review because, really, nothing that important happens lol*

Usually I love her main female lead, laugh with them and feel a little shame on the crazy stuff that happens to them, but in a fun way. But Ava, I just didn’t connect at all with her. She thinks so many crazy and annoying stuff and tries to force situations, lives in an unreal world and is so pushy with the dog thing (and believe me, I do love dogs!!)

The main male character for me was so blah that I don’t even have what to say about him, so blunt.

I couldn’t even choose the options on “this book should be for someone on the mood of” because I don’t imagine a mood where I would read it if I knew how it is. Too long for a story so slow.

Anyway now I’m on 80% so I’ll finish it even if just out of respect to Sophie.

Ps. Go read I’ve got your number from her, so much better and funnier 🥰
Ps2. It’s not less than 2 starts just because Sophie is great so I won’t do that to her

3.5. I love Sophie Kinsella as a writer and I love reading about older female characters (meaning mid-20-somethings not teens). This had all the hallmarks of her usual writing, and read very much like a rom-com. However, I didn't really connect with the main characters (I loved the friend groups and their dynamics though). And I thought instead of endearing, Harold was just a bad dog.

DNF. i love sophie kinsella’s books - been a fan since the shopaholic series. i love her quirky, hilarious protagonists and her insanely readable writing.

but this? this ain’t it, chief.

i got so ANNOYED with ava! i didn’t like a single thing about her, and the thing that really got to me (and made me DNF) is her dynamic with harold, her dog. she spoils her dog so much! and before anyone comes for me, i have a dog! the way ava trained harold (she barely trained him, come on) smh. and she expects her friends and boyfriend to put up with that? seriously.

also another thing i notice about sophie’s writing; the rival female love interest is always super gorgeous and a complete bitch. i get that it’s probably a staple in chick lit? but it’s pretty tone deaf in 2021. women should be supporting each other, not tearing each other down.

The lead character lived in a complete fantasy world and was truly painful to read about. She had such fantastical ideas about life and no sense of self reflection, eye rolls galore while attempting to read.
