I know this ending is meant to be open to interpretation but ugh! My bet is that they decided to “pull the plug”.
This book series definitely ended with some strong, underlining sci-fi aspects and I’m not mad about it. Grants constant references to pop culture is one of my favorite things when it comes to his writing and helps to capture the timeline, mindset of the characters, and just fun to be like “oh I get that one”. Only thing I didn’t enjoy that much in the sequel series was that each book added more background and sets of characters to learn and know about. Sometimes I like to be introduced to one set of characters and focus only on their POV versus adding more POVs.
Feels like a chapter from my life has now been closed since I started the Gone series years and years ago.

This was hugely disappointing. I enjoyed the original series and read the spin off hoping for the same type of enjoyment, however I only enjoyed it as it was a chance to see the aftermath of the first six books. I was fine with the change of pace and direction compared to the originals but the ending really killed the entire thing. A simulation was the biggest copout I could imagine for the series and if I’d know that was how the author was going to end the series I wouldn’t have bothered to read the last three books. I also found the lack of a proper ending really unsatisfying and the whole ‘you decide’ narrative was absolutely ridiculous.

I’m beyond perplexed about what to do with this book. It’s all a simulation. All of it. Even the FAYZ. All AI driven created by Malik and shade, fed by there memories. Memories of what? Did any of it actually happen? None of it? Edilio was short shrifted no matter how you slice it. The resolution of drake was so simple. I just. What am I supposed to do now? 9 books and I know the characters aren’t real but they actually aren’t REAL?!?! Why bother. And they vote in the end whether to end the sim or not and we don’t find out how it shakes out. It’s the Buffy in the insane asylum ending everyone feared.
The Rockborn Gang face a new horrific monster as the terrifying trilogy races to its action packed finale.
...well. That ending is going to be very divisive. I can see wars erupting online over this one.
There's not a lot I can say about this without spoiling that ending. There are a few more of the original characters, a couple of new ones, as usual for Michael. The horror rachets up another rung, but it's almost cartoonish now, it's so awful. We've passed the level where it's understandable.
I applaud Michael for continuing this series, and for publicly endorsing fanfiction based on it - he's almost begging people to write for it, and it's great that he's giving them that official backing. But for me, the Gone series finishes with the first six books. This new trilogy, while enjoyable and exciting, is just a stretch too far for me.

....okay.
Lots to unpack here.
Let's start with the fact that the series was unnecessary all together. I know Michael Grant himself said he made this series for funsies because he wanted to play around with superhero storylines... that nerd.
Anyway. 3 books years after the first series ended, for what? 2 books of slowass plot and villains with the same arc and same describing sentences in each book. The whole "It's not my fault" or "I'm always in the right" thing got really boring really fast.
Originally I thought Michael Grant was making these extra books to bring an official end to the series. But no!!! I was wrong!!!!! He wrote 3 more books just to end on another cliffhanger!!!!!!!!
And my entire childhood. 9 books. Just to use an ending on the twist of "and then he woke uo and it was all a dream"
A SIMULATION??????? 9 BOOKS FOR A SIMULATION MADE BY THE CHARACTERS NOT EVEN INTRODUCED UNTIL NOW????? BFFR.
I know I know Grant wrote it to just play around with the universe some more. But the fact he used to read fan fiction with his wife is really starting to show here. Some things are better left uncannon on ao3.
Anyway, complete let down of an ending, incredibly slow. I'll give it 3 stars because this book was better written than the last one, more like the original gone series, but I did have to give up on annotating because of how much it was boring me and slowing me down. I'm gonna pretend this series ended with light!!!
