Teen Titans: Earth One, Volume 1 by Jeff Lemire

Not the worst retelling of how the 2nd wave of Teen Titans came together (and there are many worse), but nothing really can top the Murakami-toon Teen Titans nor Young Justice toon for getting a team of young heroes into action. (Although, Season 1 of Stargirl was pretty good too...)

Earth One is DC’s new Elseworlds series, where the usual heroes are reimagined. They’ve been mostly fine until this one. I downloaded the digital version from the library and last night I thought, “I should finally read this before it goes back automatically next week.” It opened to the middle of the book. I thought that was odd, so I scrolled back and realized I’d already read half of it.

Seriously, how boring does a book have to be for me to forget reading the first half a week earlier? Now I know the answer: Teen Titans boring.

It’s not just boring, it’s also derivative. Half the story is taken from Marvel’s excellent [b:Runaways Deluxe, Vol. 1|234352|Runaways Deluxe, Vol. 1|Brian K. Vaughan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388808034s/234352.jpg|3332427] while the other half comes from [b:Young Justice, Vol. 1|12668720|Young Justice, Vol. 1|Art Baltazar|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1333579975s/12668720.jpg|17783564]. I mean, if you’re going to steal, then yeah, take it from two of the better teen superhero teams of recent memory, but you need to add something new to it. There’s nothing new here.

It’s not *terrible* but it’s nowhere near interesting, either. Skip this.

WOW. Earth One does not disappoint. I'm not very familiar with Teen Titans outside of the Cartoon Network series, and I was so ready to start the story over. I'm excited that they made the cast a little more diverse, and I loved the art style. Volume 2 can't come fast enough.

I don't know. I like the writing. It is Jeff Lemire after all, dude knows how to write. But maybe I'm just not a fan of "reimagining" origins of superheroes. I didn't love the Ultimate stuff from Marvel for the most part. And this just reads like it's trying way too hard to be modern with characters who give us no reason to believe they are heroic or special beyond being given powers. They're most just whiney kids who throw temper tantrums for the entirety of the book. And that explains most "modernized" origin stories: reluctance to actually be heroes, no costumes for most (or all, in this case) of the book, characters who are jerks, a worldview that is narcissistic and pessimistic, and radically different takes from the canon. I'll finish reading the Earth One books because I can't stop something once I start it, but if Lemire can't make me like something I don't have very high hopes with the exception of Morrison's Wonder Woman.
