(Spoilers) This book really draws you in, it's interesting and the way it's written is really nice. When I started this book I wasn't really sure where it was going to go because I hadn't read the synopsis. I found it to be shocking and fascinating all at once. Most of the characters are deeply flawed. At some point in the book I found each one of them responsible for what happened to the daughter. All of their actions lead to the chain of events that transpired. Overall, I was disappointed with how it ended but I did enjoy it and it really did have some nice twists.

I really didn’t like or understand the beginning. But it picks up and you get really involved in the characters! Really good character development!

I'm really not sure if I liked this novel or not. Lots of the narrative was very engaging but then lots was very irritating. He seemed to wrap things up almost too casually. His reaction to the main event was most unlikely. Himself and his wife never told the police which was a very unusual decision. Later he almost blames Stanley for the incident and then continues the conversation (as does Stanley)as if he never mentioned the accusation. [return]His views on life and women are a bit shocking at times for a contemporary novel. Obviously not suited to the career he has taken up as a doctor, he doesn't really like his patients. Some of those descriptions of the examinations are quite funny and dark.[return]All in all I think I'm a bit disappointed. A bit sloppy. It was a good plot that could have been better written and a better, tighter conclusion.

I can't give this a proper review because I didn't finish it. The author writes in a stream of consciousness which jumps back and forth. That didn't bother me as much. But what I couldn't get passed was some of the gross things he writes about. The main character is a doctor and some of his views and thoughts about his patients just creeped me out and made me feel uncomfortable. So I put the book down and won't be finishing it.

Koch is an author that has such a great potential, he just didn’t quite reach it here. There’s something missing that doesn’t let you completely love the book, but kinda puts you more on neutral ground. The characters felt very real but also stale and inert which made the book unsatisfying for me. I have yet to read The Dinner, which I predict will be his best work, but who knows.
