I rarely write reviews but I had such a hard time deciding how many stars to give this book. Once again Koch drew me into a story that is full of unlikable characters and narrated by the most unlikable of them all. The cast is deep and each of the characters' true nature is slowly revealed throughout the story. For writing style I would give it 5 stars but I have a hard time separating my emotions regarding the story from the author's talent and this story and the characters are often hard to read from a moral standpoint. Also, I was completely over his constant imagining of everyone having sex. It added to the overall development of the narrator but I didn't enjoy reading the details of his sordid imagination. So I settled and chose 3 stars with the disclaimer that this is worth reading.
I love his writing style and will definitely read him again - I am personally just so sick of reading anything to do with paedophilia and rape, I seem to keep accidentally reading books and watching movies that end up so rapey! Need a break from rape... but it was a fast easy read despite the subject matter.
Koch is a master at creating unlikeable characters, however, this novel held my attention far better than The Dinner.
The story begins and ends in the same place. I was of one mind about the doctor's behavior in the beginning, and had a completely different view of him at the end. I enjoyed this book!

I always forget how much I like Herman Koch until I start reading his books. Like "The Dinner" this book is both familiar and unsettling. Both comfortable and repulsive. Both ordinary and outlandish.
Marc is not necessarily a likable character and certainly not a reliable narrator but his story is compelling.
And just like Koch by the time I finished the book I was wondering just how much of his ordinary life was real.

This is a very dark book. Koch can write some really deplorable characters.
dark
medium-paced
This review is going to be me rambling as I'm essentially ranting to myself:
I'm not sure how this author does it. He has his main character say some of the dumbest and most ignorant things about both women and minorities, in fact, I cringed every time I read one. The main character is hardly likable, and yet just like with The Dinner I couldn't put this book down. Having finished it, it's not as if it was some complex story, in fact it's not even a full thriller like The Dinner was, but regardless of all these "issues" I have I really liked this!
You know, I definitely can't say Koch isn't a good writer. Whether he has these horrible characters say and do offensive things because he himself believes any of the things he has these characters saying or not, I have no clue. I start off being putt off and a bit angry when I first come across these things in his books, but then end up really enjoying the story anyways. It's nonsense! So I guess I have to assume he's writing the characters this way on purpose, which means he's actually great at creating and writing characters. Well ok then I guess he is a good writer!
