I tried with this book, but I just DNF’d it at 53%. I’m looking back at how I felt in the earlier part so the book and am sitting here wondering “was I drunk?” Lol. I was hopefully optimistic about things, but was just masking my feelings I guess. The thing that keeps popping into my mind is how I can’t get over her horribly abusive father. I feel like that was such a big focus in the beginning to middle of the book. I get that these things happen, but that’s all that stuck out. Nothing exciting enough happened to make me forget this detail…, Also, the woman that isn’t actually her mother pulling a Catelyn Stark moment and treating her poorly… I get it, she hates the King, and so feels like she needs to hate his daughter, but damn, it was hard to read. And then we have the snarky daughter of this woman treating the FMC no better. Just so many unlikable characters. No redeeming qualities.
I can’t get over how immature the FMC can be. Making decisions to just to stick it to her father, and of course negative consequences come from it. Girl you brought it on yourself. While it doesn’t excuse abuse, she needs to stop only thinking of herself. She can get innocent people killed for her knee jerk decisions…
And then we have the MMC who I feel like his POV was so bland and confusing for me. When it came to the scenes with the rebels, I found myself so confused about what they were doing, where they are, who’s who. I don’t know if this is just a reading slump, or if I’m just not connecting with the book right now.
The world building was also confusing. I like to imagine while I’m reading how things and places might look, and I just had a hard time getting a clear picture of what I was reading.. and what’s with the cars? I agree, how are elevators and cars still in operation if the very kingdom that created it is gone?
Maybe one day I’ll give this another try. I kept found my brain hurting from the strain. I was falling asleep. I have other books on my TBR to get it and this just isn’t interesting right now.

I was absolutely blown away by this book. I went into it not expecting a whole lot, just another book in my long list of Kindle Unlimited reads, but I was absolutely entranced by the world building and character development and just everything about this book. I couldn't tear myself away, and it ended up being a 2am finish.
Up there with one of my favourite book boyfriends. Also forbidden romance and angst. Say less.

WOW. I loved this story. It’s unique and compelling! I loved Nizarra’s character - she is smart and strong and everything you want in an FMC. And Dagen …

I enjoyed the book. I will read the second book when it comes out. There are pros and cons to this book and the story:
Pro:
FMC Nizzara is battle strong, kind, and not annoying. MMC Dagen is dark but loving and giving Rhysand vibes. Their banter I loved. The slow burn was good. The games and trials aspect I liked. I like the idea of vessel rings linked with a spirit and the magical element in there. The last 150 pages were fun to read and that part was exciting.
Cons:
The world building lacked, it was so slow the first 300 pages. I felt like the same story line was repeating the first 300 pages: Nizzara is training, her dad is awful, she is sad/lonely. I was getting bored and almost DNF it. Then when the story did pick up it was enjoyable and I flew through it. Unfortunately, it felt very rushed in the end. SPOILER*||Too much happened in the last few chapters and it almost felt like the author was dropping information in my lap instead of it being revealed naturally. The battle was too quick with the half monster people-rushed. What happened with her dad, her soul, bargain over Dagen and the element of the heir from the other kingdom was done in 1 chapter- felt rushed. Then the last 2 chapters the sister element came into play (didn’t feel like a natural reveal) and the information was just dumping in my lap- like the author was telling me instead of the story unfolding naturally- felt rushed again.|| The spice element was good, slow burn done well but when the scene finally happened I would have enjoyed a longer spicy scene- felt like it was over too quick for the slow burn that was nicely developed.
I will read the second book because I want to know what happens. I just hope the pacing of the book is better.
The unique magic system and slow-burn chemistry between the MC's was great, however the world-building is lacking and the FMC makes frustrating, repetitive decisions, that slow the pacing through the first 75% of the book. I did enjoy the ending and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
