Yeah... nizarra and dagen- I love a powerful couple. He's definitely morally grey (deathwalker, eats souls), but also a cinnamon roll?? And shes a ruthless extremely powerful heiress to the throne who wants to overthrow her dad, but is terrified of her power.
I love that there was no betraying of the mmc or fmc, that the relationships between family members were complicated. I'm still a little fuzzy on the political sides of this book (explained too quickly I think) and I feel the need to go back and map out what's going on. Zo, Zem and Zarr ... tricky to keep track of what's going on where and what it means.
This book ended on a cliffhanger, no idea where this series is going as it feels like the world building is going to/should come in detail on the next book.

I am being a bit more lenient here because this is a debut novel. I loved the Serpent and the Wings of Night so anything being marketed as being similar I was gonna eat up.
This book had great potential. The magic system in this book is really interesting actually and I genuinely do not think I have ever come across anything like it. However, the plot and the language could have definitely used some editing as there were several grammatical errors or word choice errors throughout the book that were quite jarring to read.
Sometimes I had a bit of a feeling that this book suffered from a bit of an identity crisis. There are cars and guns, yet the main girl still fights with daggers and swords. The plot was a bit all over the place and could have used some streamlining. I would have preferred a bit more descriptive writing as it was quite a bit of telling instead of showing. What's more, the MMC dislikes how the second love interest only has interest in the FMC because of her beauty, when his inner monologue is also 70% of the time about how pretty she is, like.... okay. I think this ultimately made their romance more of a lust-based love than genuine love so I couldn't really buy into it. The worst part of the book though was the nickname the MMC had for the FMC, which was repeated way too often and absolutely made me want to self-delete into non-existence.
All in all, this was a okay read overall and pretty good for a debut. It is not a dupe for the Serpent and the Wings of Night but had some plot elements that were similar.
