a very sweet contemporary mg about a bunch of misfit kiddos becoming friends. there is however quite a bit of ableism from the bully, who both uses the r* slur and mocks the deaf character frequently.

I couldn't put this down because the level of what was to come out of this. Love the diversity of the characters. I gave it the rating I did because I can identify especially at that age. When I was 11 I was bullied and I didn't have friends either. My mom worked long hours so I was alone most of the time until 7 or 8 pm. I felt for Virgil, I knew exactly what he was going through and I was rooting for him. I am not going to spoil more, but when I read this book I felt seen because of my personal experiences and I felt every main protagonist was a representation of the stages of my life except the bully and those parents. Although I am not as old as Lola I am closer to her now in this stage of my life.

Overall, just a wonderful coming of age story especially for children who are being bullied or feel alone because of diversity. When I have a chance I am going to buy this book and share with my children. Also, parents be mindful of how you act and speak around your kids, this is why the bully is a bully, he looks up to his dad and his dad isn't the kindest man.
