This was such a sweet book. I love that Ari and Dante meet randomly because Ari wants to learn how to swim and Dante offers to teach him then ta da, they’re friends for life.

I found it odd, how Ari kept Dante separate from other aspects of his life, not his family but his school ‘friends’.

I loved how Dante liked everyone and was a sweet, kind boy, even if he hated shoes. His family showed that Mexicans and other Latino people are not the racist stereotypes that so many portray in books and films. His parents were in high paying, respectable jobs, as were Ari’s.

Dante’s matter of fact ness around his sexuality made me laugh so much. He liked kissing boys and that is that. I think that’s how a lot of people have felt.

Ari’s struggle to understand how he felt about Dante and around his lack of sexual attraction or desire is how I think a lot of people feel growing up. I think there should be an emphasis on the fact that you might not feel things as black and white as others, and actually, what love feels like to you is completely different for someone else.

I loved it. I just feel like it was a little long, hence I rated it 4 stars and not 5 stars.

I love that Lin-Manuel Miranda narrated it, too. And said ‘Alexander Hamilton’ multiple times throughout the book!

my goodness I love this book. it was very simple with the writing and sometimes very cut and dry which I normally don't love. However, I think that it works here. It makes the story feel like it was told by an actual fifteen to seventeen year old boy. The writing style helps contribute to building the thought process and feelings of a teenager. The book as a whole didn't feel pretentious or overly formal. It felt like what it is. A coming of age novel about a boy struggling through maturity and learning to discover himself and the "secrets of the universe." It felt real and raw and personal.
It was revealing and it settles around the idea of ari's internalized homophobia and how it kept him from realizing himself. I cannot wait for the sequel though I would be perfectly happy to leave ari and dante where they are. happy and together and in love.

This is a re-read. I first read this while on vacation back in 2017 and I was in love with it then and I'm in love with it now. I love the characters and the coming of age and self discovery/coming out to yourself elements throughout the whole thing. Watching as Ari struggles with deep internalized homophobia is painfully real and beautifully written. This whole book reads so lyrically, it feels like music to me when I read it. It reminds me of perks of being a wallflower if that book had been more diverse and centered on its queer characters. Also, Dante Quintana is simply my baby and possibly one of my favorite book characters to come out of YA fiction in the last 10 years. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel next month!!!
