Big up Polidori for writing snarky self-insert fanfiction about your annoying but hot frenemy, I cannot honestly say I haven't done the same.
The context behind the conception of The Vampyre is fascinating, and perhaps I enjoy that more than the tale itself. The narration is incredibly detached, reading more so like an extended synopsis than narrative, making for no emotional connection. Really dry.
Despite this, credit where credit is due, Polidori does essentially solidify this new archetype of... well, Byronic... vampires. I'm very interested in vampires in relation to capitalism, so I appreciated the links between vampirism and aristocratic culture which is such a great "modernisation" of folkloric vampires and their links to Feudalism concerns. Very important groundwork which most subsequent vampire stories rely on.

It’s funny that the great myth of vampires originates from one rich dude being a POS

The Vampyre surprised me. It started off a little dull and I believed it was a typical classic story, stuck in its era and not really able to communicate to modern day readers. I was wrong. This short story had more depth to it than say, the Twilight series or most modern vampire tales. This little story doesn't dwell on the protagonist, he is left in the shadows, left for the readers imagination to conjure up a suitably hideous inhuman creature. Instead the victim is focused on. His befriending of a person he doesn't really know or understand and his slow descent into madness is carefully described and the reader gets to witness the affect on the victims themselves. A great story and an appropriate genesis for the vampire genre.

This story was the blueprint for presenting vampires as charming. This was a fun read, and whilst I kind of enjoyed the removed way the story was told. It felt very easy to predict what was going to happen but then it was probably highly original at the time. I am thankful for this story and the modern iterations of vampires it spurned including Carmilla, Dracula, Interview with the Vampire and of course twilight
