So far, the novel is a fascinating read. I enjoy looking at the themes of witches (or potential witches), being a good Christian in a very religious world and being seen at odd ends with most of the community. Yet, I find that the novel was too long a read and could have been shorter as well as to the point.

OH MAN, this pains me to only be giving this 3*. I have such a crush on Chris Bohjalian and thoroughly enjoy his books and his writing style. With all that said, this one just didn't do it for me. That does not mean that it won't be your favorite read of 2021.

This story is based in the 17th century, Puritan Boston. Mary is a young beautiful women married to Thomas Deerfield who is much older than her. Mary wants a divorce, which is hard to get during this time. Mary may or may not be a witch. The story goes on from there. It starts out a bit slow, but does build throughout.

If you enjoy period books AND Chris Bohjalian, I encourage you to add this to your list of must reads for 2021.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Doubleday Books for this advanced readers copy. This book is due to release in April 2021.

Mary Deerfield is a young Puritan woman who lives in Boston in 1662. When her husband Thomas’ physical abuse becomes too much to bear, she breaks from tradition and makes an unprecedented request to be granted a divorce on the grounds of cruelty. Mary’s decision to assert herself rather than submit to the will of her husband and the Church causes a cascade of unexpected events, the most terrifying of which is Mary being accused of witchcraft, a charge that could lead to her execution.

Loved this. Historical fiction that starts as a drama of a abused wife in the mid 17th century. She wants a divorce, and is declared a witch from the town's people. Then it becomes a court procedural, with incredible suspense and twists. Then a thriller, with a little romance. It just fantastic.

This book had a slow start. I showed how little women in Boston in 1662 had, they were thought of almost the same and the indentured however they were honored to have children. Any woman that had a voice or saw how they were treated where concerned as wrong and that is what the first part of the book was about. In 1662 with witch hunting starting the Hartford and coning to Boston, an woman with a voice, any woman that stood up for herself was considered a witch. This is what happened to Mary Deerfield. Poor woman abused by her husband and then the unspeakable. But the ending, the slow start was worth the ending. Overall a great book. Glad I stuck through it, glad I picked it up (if I can still say that for an audiobook).
