After reading reviews of this book, I was concerned that the violence would be too intense for me, and it almost was. I was considering giving up about 50 pages in. The protagonist's husband is indeed a monster, but I'm glad I carried on. This is great historical fiction, my favorite genre.

Would really give this 2 1/2 stars. Most of the book was extremely tedious but became more compelling by the end. My reaction may be due to the nature of the audio version. The.....narrator....read......very.....very.......slowly.

Spoiler alert!

The story overall is pretty fun especially around Halloween. However, this book felt like it would be a better fit as a short story. The ending is what makes this book worth reading. And, way more men needed to die.

Good historical fiction! While reading this I found myself filled with the desperation of one who is stuck in a situation they don't have any power to control. One I can relate to given recent life events! If an author can make you emote as if you were the character, I think they've done an incredible job.

Super slow pacing and just couldn’t get into it. Read about 35% and called it

Slooooooooooooooow. Bohjalian’s are either gripping page turners…or put me to sleep. This one was the latter. Well-written…just really really slow.

I've read a few Chris Bohjalian novels and have found him to be a mixed bag. His best ones, imo, are [b:The Flight Attendant|35506211|The Flight Attendant|Chris Bohjalian|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1498628313l/35506211._SY75_.jpg|56914238] and this one. It's always satisfying to pick up a piece of historical fiction that can bring a bygone era to life with enough dramatic tension to keep you on the edge of your seat. Satisfying read.
