This book starts out a bit slow and by slow I mean boring. Because I love a good witch book, I kept at it and was rewarded in the end. I love how these stories show how much we have evolved as a nation and also how much we are doomed to keep repeating the same mistakes.

I have truly loved most of his previous books. I had to force myself to finish this. I never really felt engaged with the characters and didn't really find it suspenseful. I listened to the audiobook and it wasn't my favorite performance either.

This book appealed to me immediately as the subject matter - the vilification of marginalized women - is something that has long fascinated me. And what better setting for it than puritanical New England? The female characters were vivid and relatable. The men in power were mostly predictable and infuriating, with a few surprises. It was a compelling story throughout. The main twist was no so surprising but the ending was, and quite satisfying, too!

Hated every character.

Suspenseful and riveting, I read the book quickly, absorbed by the drama. These Puritans were a nasty, narrow minded bunch. No wonder their sect, as it was in Boston in 1662-3, did not last long. But the book enabled me to realize how strongly religious fundamentalism is rooted in our country.
The story reminded me of the confirmation hearing of Justice Cavanaugh. The men on the committee who heard the testimony of the woman who accused Cavanaugh were just as dismissive as the magistrates in the 17th century.

Mary seemed quite reckless considering what she was up against.

Could not get past page 115. This is just such a snooze. Abandoned it...life’s too short.
