A return to form for Sue Townsend and one of my favourites of the Mole series. The backdrop of the Iraq war and the arc of Adrian going from supporter to understanding that his son is fighting in a senseless war is as funny and moving as I'd expect from an Adrian Mole book. The debt storyline is very of the time, when we were all having credit far beyond our earnings thrown at us by lenders. Adrian's relationship with his boss Mr Carlton-Hayes is lovely. Pandora, Tania and Rosie make less of an appearance than usual but Pauline and George are as funny and dysfunctional as ever.

Mole's longest and for that matter most long-winded diary, with relatively sparse naïve musings. Maybe he's too preoccupied with credit cards and a clingy girlfriend?

Si torna agli alti livelli dell'Adrian Mole di un tempo, pressato da Marigold e innamorato di Daisy, un cigno come nemesi e un figlio in Kuwait. Stavolta alle prese con la politica estera di Tony Blair e il difficile equilibrio di bilancio nell'epoca delle carte di credito, Sue Townsed ci regala un gran libro in cui Adrian Mole ha dalla sua parte solo l'aristocratico proprietario della libreria in cui lavora, e ovviamente i suoi romanzi in divenire.

I don't believe in guilty pleasures because it's weird to feel guilt about something you like. But the Adrian Mole books are a silly pleasure to me, especially the latter ones, when the teenage whining has made way for his adult troubles. I do think he is one of the great comic characters in the British canon, even though his books flounder a bit when it comes to writing.
