So unexpected was this tale, and not my usual genre. Really, really liked it though, and it has made a great creepy companion for this Halloween season.

Personally, this book wasn’t for me. I really thought I would enjoy it more than I did, but simply did not.

It was kind of all over the place in my opinion, but I really loved the gothic atmosphere shown throughout the book!

Strong Jane Eyre vibes! In order to secure her independence and employment in the early 1900s, Jane Shoringfield proposes a “marriage of convenience” to the handsome but reclusive doctor Augustine Lawrence. On their wedding night, the fearless surgeon becomes troubled and paranoid - haunted by nightmares. Yep, some Jekyll and Hyde vibes too! This novel is written in a classic gothic horror style - Unsettling, disturbing, forbidding and full of malevolent spirits. If you’re in for some page-turning Halloween creepiness, this is your book.

A Gothic horror showing the slow progression from logic into madness. Uniquely unsettling and cleverly written. I enjoyed the characters, and was intrigued by the plot, but am also a chicken so had to take breaks when it became too much for me. Not a book for the faint of heart.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the ebook.

This book gripped me from the start. It had a bit of romance that wasn’t overly in your face. Then it had mystery and suspense. Towards the end it did drag on a bit too much for me. But I was eager to learn how the story would end

As far as I’m concerned, this book is a masterpiece of gothic horror. I don’t know what it is, I guess it must have just hit the right buttons for me, but I am legitimately moved, affected, and terrified having absolutely devoured this book over the last 30 hours.

It’s rare for a book to actually make me feel fear. I can be creeped out, I can be thrilled, but I very rarely feel actual genuine horror, and this book did it to me. It’s something about the isolation, the determination driven by “no other choice”, and even a handful of scenes so well written that conjuring the image in my head made me actually shiver.

I’m pretty sure I said “oh my god” and “oh no. No no no” and “well fuck that” multiple times, out loud, while I was reading this.

Jane is the consummate historical horror heroine: she’s driven, brilliant, brave, deeply flawed, and neurodivergent to boot. I want to be her best friend but also never hear her talk about anything she’s ever been through.

And at the core of this book is actually a really sweet love story, culminating in a moment of such unbelievable trust and respect and competence and unity between Jane and her husband that I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.

I know there’s some “I didn’t understand the math stuff” to be said here, and look, I didn’t either, but the important part is that Jane did, and I was happy for her.

I don’t want to say much more and give it away, but I think I’m gonna have to read a couple fluffy, trashy romance novels before I can read anything else. I need a come down.

Oh this book. It started off so good. And then just as it was rounding toward the exciting part it got weird and confusing. Super disappointed.
