The setting of this book is a gritty southern town in Virginia. You have a newly elected sherif who is black. He was voted in from the black community and the new residents that are moving in. The other side of the county is white and they are apart of a group called the sons of the confederacy. As if the racial tension was not enough. You also have the backdrop of a serial killer running amuck in the town.

Please read trigger warnings before diving into this one.

S. A. Cosby does a wonderful job describing the town and the tension that Titus (sheriff) has to navigate through. However, there were a few plot holes for me on this one. He introduces tons of characters some who do not have anything to do with the major crime that is being investigated. I also wanted to know more about the connection of the actual criminals once they were uncovered. He left too many loose ends for me.

Regardless I felt this book was just ok.

This was my favorite of his books! It really was a propulsive thriller from start to finish! It had me on the edge of my seat. While it was graphic (as I’ve seen it described in other reviews), it didn’t seem more graphic than was necessary to build the suspense and terror in the story.  It was definitely gritty, and SA Cosby is a master at setting up the tension in the atmosphere as the two story lines collided so expertly at the end of the book. He is masterful and just keeps getting better and better with every book!! Highly recommend!

I did a tandem read with the audiobook and the kindle version. I thought Adam Lazarre-White was a wonderful narrator for this one. It’s definitely not a book for the faint of heart because it does get quite gruesome. I think this book does a great job depicting racism as well as exploring morality and religion. I wish there had been more about Latrell. Titus does a a tiny monologue to Darlene about how he loves Charon, and that’s why he’s hard on it. This reminded me of James Baldwin’s quote about America.
The fall festival scene was reminiscent of Charlottesville white supremacist attack in 2027, especially because the book is set in Virginia.
I don’t think the book had any major plot twists, and I also wouldn’t say it was predictable.

🧠 My thoughts
This is the first book I read from S.A. Cosby and I blew my mind up. I have never read any crime, mystery book this deep and powerful. This was definitely not a thriller but a slow-burn and deep literary book. This book is a good example of a book that I want to read to understand racism and dark aspects of human nature. I had to choice but to empathize with most of the characters in this book.

However, since this is not a thriller, the story could be dragging sometimes. The romance part between the main character and the girlfriend should have been delved deeper into, for me it was a bit too shallow and I couldn't help but feel like it was redundant.

Nevertheless, I have to give this book 5 stars. Otherwise, it would haunt me for the rest of my life if I wouldn't do this.

👍 What I like
- Deeply-meaningful dialogues and storyline
- Excellent job to reflect the racist and dark aspects of human nature
- Cohesive and powerful narration
- Poetic and beautiful prose

👎 What I don't like
- A bit weak in romance part
- Some parts can drag a bit

This book totally gripped me as I followed Titus as he tried to solve the case and keep Charon from boiling over. The pacing was perfect and balanced the case with everything else going on so well. The family moments felt powerful and unique as I can't remember many son/father/brother relationships explored in a mystery thriller. The commentary on life for a Black sheriff in rural Virginia was also perfectly written and informative.
