This was a tough one. So many things that I like (fantasy, world building, dreaming, wlw) but it was so difficult to read. It took me sooooo long. I don't understand it! I would start reading and my eyes would slide off the page! I'd start thinking about work or a tv show or me and bae's next date. I could NOT concentrate on this book for the life of me.

I don't think the writing had anything to do with it. It was pretty and innovative, in a way that books in English written by ESL writers often are. The author used phrases and word combinations and descriptions that I normally wouldn't think of, and reading them often made me pause like, huh, but I enjoyed and appreciated it a lot.

The story itself was a bit confused. IDK if I just think so because it never managed to capture my attention fully, but the plot just seemed to meander dully, and failed to ever MOVE. Lots of times I had little to no idea what was going on. I also feel like the character interaction, while good, was lacking. I don't feel like I KNOW anything about Alva or Janos or Moth or even Valeria. We got skimming glances of them and Elianna's relationships with them, but never a deep dive.

Again, I don't know. I enjoyed this book, but something about it left me very unsatisfied.

2.5 stars.

Reading is such a powerful tool to have. The concept of this story really got me excited. I picked it up ready to settle in for a good read. The beginning did start out good. Yet, it quickly became apparent to me that my joy was disappearing fast. The story moved slowly without a lot of details about the world that Eliana existed in or why her talents were so precious. In fact, after reading about a third of the way I put the book down for good. Yet, despite my lack of joy, I decided to come back to this book and give it a second chance. Only, this time I picked up the book and opened it to a random spot a little past the middle of the story and began to start reading. What I read then had me intrigued. Details about the world were more apparent. However, I still could not capture that emotional connection towards Eliana or anyone else in the story. I can see where the author was going with this book and I applaud the author but I needed that character connection, more details, and intensity earlier on. Sadly, this book was not for me (this time).

A brightly realised setting with a small handful of vivid characters. The atmosphere and sense of place in the first section of the novel are very powerful, and the overbearing sense of decay and oncoming doom set up the second half rather well.
The plot is less well developed, and mostly predictable. Exposition pops up at odd times and breaks the flow of the narrative.
Still enjoyed experiencing the world that has been created here!
