This gentle yet deeply felt portrait of an extraordinary yet often overlooked creature was a true pleasure to spend time with. If you need encouragement to slow down and take in the wonders around you—or to feel your kinship with a strange and living world, pick up this peaceful yet powerful science memoir about the author’s time confined to a sickbed and the extraordinary companionship of a simple snail. 🐌

The author writes of their experience observing a wild snail living on their nightstand while they were bed-bound with a chronic illness. It is a beautiful and insightful meditation on the phenomenal abilities of snails, the incredibly fast pace of the human everyday, and the societal isolation of unwell people who can not keep up with such speeds. A short but impactful read that I highly recommend (especially if you want to learn some cool snail facts)

This was probably one of the most unique books I'll ever read. Tova Bailey's careful observations of a wild snail from her bed are insightful, informative, and beautiful. There was a lot packed into this tiny book, and when trying to explain it to others I found myself struggling. However, I wish I'd been able to listen to an audiobook, or even sit down and finish it in one afternoon. Stretching my reading out over days made the book harder to get through, even boring, and I had to push myself to pick it up. Even so, I'd definitely recommend this little guide to snails and life!

Excellent memoir about an experience of chronic illness, allowed me a glimpse into someone else’s experience of disability and chronic illness as I seek to understand my own experiences
