The author writes of their experience observing a wild snail living on their nightstand while they were bed-bound with a chronic illness. It is a beautiful and insightful meditation on the phenomenal abilities of snails, the incredibly fast pace of the human everyday, and the societal isolation of unwell people who can not keep up with such speeds. A short but impactful read that I highly recommend (especially if you want to learn some cool snail facts)

I can not recommend this book enough if you are down from an illness/injury or if you just want to feel good. I looked up the best books to read for Spring, and this came up with great reviews. It's really short and beautiful and I'm so glad I read it. You will learn more about snails than you thought you cared to know or you thought possible. I definitely have more of an appreciation for them when they show up in my garden instead of pests I need to remove. I liked that she was also a little conflicted about the friend picking up a random snail to be placed inside, because she knew it was wrong yet it gave her the inspiration to make it through. And honestly, when you are down like that, you cling to anything. I wished I read this book while I was couch bound for so long.

As someone who spent seven years severely ill and a number of them essentially housebound a lot of what the author wrote spoke volumes to me. The prose was beautiful and I was surprised to be so interested in the life of a little woodland snail.

one of my friends recommended this small book for a yearly reading "friends favorites" challenge after raving about it off-and-on for awhile. without saying much, I owe them a lot for my new love for this quiet book.
