After a disappointment with [b:Dragon Ball, Vol. 2: Wish Upon a Dragon|1267078|Dragon Ball, Vol. 2 Wish Upon a Dragon (Dragon Ball, #2)|Akira Toriyama|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1442541887s/1267078.jpg|1255972], I'm not entirely sure why I carried on rereading the three volumes I have of this. I wanted to revisit it, first of all, because I do remember enjoying this volume in particular, and secondly, I really needed to get more books into my reading challenge this year.
Thankfully, I remembered correctly, and I really did enjoy this volume again the second time around. With more humour that isn't just left to crude sexual jokes that really aren't that funny in this age, and with some more beautiful artwork, the start of the new story line was spectacular. I loved watching Goku begin his training, his vague, naive sense of the world come to play, a new player joining the team and really trying as best he could. There was a lot more in this than previous volumes and it's a much better continuation than the second volume was. Much more enjoyable.
As always, the artwork is something that is a reliable in this series - Toriyama's artwork is something to be appreciated, and I would happily go to a museum dedicated to his art. He has style and skill with a pen, and it's shown throughout this issue. I really enjoyed rereading this particular volume, and it's made me remember how much I wanted to read all 42 issues.

I loved the humor, the training and the start of the big competition!
Also, big praise to the best "opening words" of a ceremony. "Woof." That is all.

As much as I'm enjoying myself with this manga I don't know if I'll ever be able to give it a five star rating. It is crazily entertaining, probably because it doesn't take itself too seriously and just allows itself to be fun, but at the same time this careless attitude is what let's it down at parts. First of, the sexualisation of women in this manga is utterly horrendous and unredeemable. Rape and sexual assault is normalised and portrayed as something that men do to women casually and with no real consequences. Also the conclusion to some conflicts are frankly lazy. Such as Krillin's lack of nose saving him in his battle. I get that it is a nod to the fact that this is a manga and Krillin is drawn that way, but it doesn't make any sense and is completely anti climatic. Even despite all this... It's still a lot of fun, so I'll keep reading. Sue me.
Goku and Kuririn are so adorable

Pretty much perfect funny manga. Almost inspired me to wear a turtle shell and deliver milk for 8 months.
Almost.
Almost.
Hilarious and actioned packed, volume 3 is the best yet of Dragon Ball. The characters are better developed and more likeable and the training sessions and tournament scenes are great action.
