It’s a collection of short stories unlike others I have read, with a distinct, piercing bitterness, irony and poetic form, telling of the lives of peasants in Serbia, the banal tragedies of the countryside with a kind eye but sarcastic smile. Whether showing the peasant as drunk, hard working, envious or mocked by the authorities, Markovic always does it with a particular style, usually employing what in Romanian goes by as “haz de necaz”, which means making fun out of troubles.
"I did nothing wrong, but they kept reporting me to the police. ..... I went to ask them to drop the charges, but when I arrived it turned out the office hours were up. And since they were up, they’ll go on with the charges, so that’s just that. "
"The skies were falling upon your inward sky: beauty is the hardest to blow for a man, but beauty says nothing. And nothing can coincide down here with it. You don’t know how they punish sinners who would like to get something from it: Expecting anything concrete from beauty."
