Loved this book so much, I don't have the right words to describe it. If you have been reading Schwab's books for the last few years or even from the start, you know to expect something thrilling, unique and heartbreaking with her writing. This book is all we readers want and more when we pick up a Schwab story. It will be a long year until book 2 is out but at least Vengeful is out next month, so the wait won't be that bad.
One thing for certain, this book put me in the mood to go back and read my copies of The Archived and The Unbound again, conveniently repackaged as The Dark Vault just a few weeks back. Yes, I bought the new one even though I have the others individually in hardcover because this is Victoria Schwab we are talking about, the books are worth it.

I enjoyed this book so much and can't wait to start the second one in the series. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the recurring mentioning of Harry Potter.
Had I read this book back when it got first published in 2018, I would have been thrilled. Yes, I already had issues with JKR, but HP was still very much my special interest. Since then things have changed. For one, I think JKR is an awful human being. And secondly, I realised how problematic the books are as well.
But aside from the HP mentionings, I loved this book - the first one by V.E. Schwab I've read.

I was expecting this to be a scary one. This book was short and you could easily predict the ending.

This is a charming middle grade story. I would’ve devoured something like this when I was younger. The audiobook was lovely to listen to.
