Way better than it looks and I really liked how it showed a lot of stories from the Chinese culture and how it showed the Chinese understanding and way of living.
I liked the stories in this book, and my favorite part was when Pinmei and Yishan rode on BaiMa and saw the Sea King. My favorite character was Lady Meng, and the thing that surprised me the most was when the emperor figured out that Yishan was the Ginseng Boy. Overall, I liked this book.

Grace Lin. She is an exceptional storyteller. I love her early reader books (Ling & Ting). This was a full novel. Beautiful, clear and thoughtful writing.

This is possibly my favourite of the three books. I do love a good grandmother-granddaughter dynamic. The icy setting and storyteller vibes were also fantastic added bonuses. Overall this was an adorable and very pretty series of stories to tell my children.
Grace Lin continues to write books with the most beautiful art in the world. Even if the stories were terrible, the art would make the books worthwhile. But this book is great. There's a lot going on, which I didn't realize at first, so once it all started coming together, I was pretty confused. I wish I had been paying more attention to how things fit together from the beginning. Also, a book with a crazy and terrible ruler who wants to build a wall no matter the trouble it causes? Why do all books seem so timely these days?
