I feel funny about rating a book raising funds for charity but I feel the rating is merited here. This is an anthology of comics, art and recollections about the 2019/2020 bushfire catastrophe. It showcases a huge number of artists and writers, some of whom are also firefighters, and gives the reader insight into what this bushfire was like to experience. Pieces may describe specific real events but other pieces might focus on animal characters or even superheroes.

What I didn't expect was the need to pause multiple times, as I was getting overwhelmed. Although I wasn't directly in danger from that bushfire, I still remember the sky turning orange, the air becoming unbreathable, and us waiting for updates from family members who had to leave everything behind to hide in the water of the beach. This also was not nearly the first bushfire that impacted me and my family. I might have some trauma to work through. I would therefore caution anyone who has been impacted by bushfire: be kind to yourself, consider whether you are the right reader for this material, and take breaks as needed.

I did appreciate that the anthology ended with some gallows humour so that I didn't finish completely broken. Much appreciated.

This is a really diverse mix of artwork, comics, and short prose and all of the proceeds from this charity anthology go to support firefighting services in Australia, so if you’re interested I definitely recommend picking this one up if you have the chance!
ps. don't read this in public because you will definitely totally absolutely cry
