Sometimes you just feel like reading a short story. Maybe you don't have a lot of time to invest. Maybe you are looking for a literary aperitif before you dive into the next book. Maybe the last book left you emotionally drained and you don't have the heart to spare just yet.

Out Behind the Barn will fulfill many of those things, but oh, don't you dare think that a short story can't, and won't, hesitate to toy with your emotions.

I feel as if it's been so long since I've sat and read something in one sitting. This was an incredible little novella. I didn't expect to cry reading something from the horror genre but this one did me in. The two main characters were children and I think that's why it got to me the way it did. This is the first time I've read anything by John Boden, but I was already a huge Chad Lutzke fan after reading a few of his novellas. If you're looking for a shory, emotional and fast paced read that will have you in your feelings, I highly suggest this one, but for the last few chapters, have your tissues ready.

The story of one woman going to great lengths to have the family she always wanted, no matter the cost.

Out Behind the Barn is a novella following 2 young boys living with a motherly figure known as Miss Maggie. Miss Maggie occasionally brings new visitors out to the house, but none seem to stick around too long. The boys seem content in their lives, but there’s an under current that something is amiss. When a newcomer figures out what’s happening, they plot an escape plan that brings about a new kind of peace for the boys and their self.

This reminded me of my grandmother's land and the barn and coops around it. Deceptive little book of dark whimsy. I liked this a lot.
