Covid meets Lovecraft

What if the next pandemic brought more changes than just mask mandates and vaccines? What if it changed humanity itself? Sister, Maiden, Monster takes that premise, adds in a touch of Lovecraftian horror, to create a fast-paced nightmare of descent into the apocalypse. The book splits the narrative into three intersecting parts, each bringing a new perspective and a little more insight into the unfolding mystery. If you’re looking for a quick fun read full of unsettling eldritch horrors, you can’t go wrong here.

I absolutely devoured this novel. It was horrific and gross. I expected that going in. Yet somehow I was still unprepared. That's the sort of thing I enjoy (along with the queer characters and relationships), so it's wonder I couldn't put it down.

The book is fast-paced, packed with terrifying and strange imagery and events (pandemic novel meets eldritch horror). Honestly, I would read this even if it were doubled in size, and I would read it just as ravenously. I couldn't get enough of all this had to offer—the world building as it is gradually revealed, the characters as they face the horrors around them and horrors from within... This novel is so rich, but I find myself wanting a second helping (perhaps a re-read is in order). There's so much more that the reader doesn't get to see—the perspective of other characters, what happens beyond the open ending. I'm so curious.

The metaphors beat you over the head occasionally, but never for so long as to majorly detract from an inexorable drive towards disaster. Good body horror for those so inclined.

below you will find a list of one liners i came up with during this book but couldn’t pick one for this review so have them all:

- the rat brain is an unpaid actor

- just a couple of biblical accurate angels needing a little snicky snack

- and then i learned what splatterpunk was

- the amount of times i almost passed out during this book

Interesting concept but not the greatest in execution. I felt as confused as the characters at some points and the ending was so open ended it left a lot to be desired

The ending blew me away. I was in for the ride, it was gory horror following three different women through a brutal pandemic that brings on zombie/vampire symptoms. The book is segmented in three parts to tell each woman's story. The final story weaving them all together. I was not expecting where the ending would go and it just kept going. Would highly recommend! And hoping for a book 2.

This book is like a fever dream!! It’s insanely gory, graphic, and just woah. I loved it and would have given it 5 stars if it wasn’t for the ending

This book was insane and absolutely not what I was expecting, but it was incredibly captivating. I finished it the same day I picked it up.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF at 32%. Idk, it’s just not holding my attention. I was hoping we’d get into some messed up stuff by now, and other than eating brains or drinking blood, meh.
