This is not a book for the faint of heart

I enjoyed the parts of this novel that were focused on family and relationships and the impact that actions can have on people over time, but I did not enjoy how deeply dark and violent and almost gleefully (?) descriptive of torture it was. A little too much for me on that front.

I enjoyed the first 250 pages of this book with the twists and turns, but then… it turned way too gruesome. I did not check trigger warnings and other reviews before reading. The descriptions of horrific acts were very graphic and almost made it a DNF for me.

i would say this book was 5 stars for me up until 50% of the way through, when it started to drag.

here’s what i liked: the story kept me guessing. i was truly shocked by most of the plot twists. i think the relationship between claire and lydia, as well as their connections to julia and their parents, were well done. the villain was truly despicable. the book had some interesting commentary on rape culture and what it means to be a “pretty girl” - for better or for worse. i also liked the inclusion of sam’s letters to julia.

what i didn’t like: the violence was, at times, gratuitous. it was overwhelming and graphic and disgusting, which i understand could be necessary to a point but it felt overkill. in addition, i really did not like claire. she was, quite frankly, DUMB! obviously she had some character development and became less of a pushover but ultimately she irritated me. the book also probably could’ve been at least 50 pages shorter to keep the plot tight and less draggy.

The writing style of this book threw me a little because third person is hard for me to follow or enjoy sometimes but I got so sucked into this I finished it in less than 24 hours.

I was NOT expecting the way this unraveled or how the people connected. Please check the trigger warnings because it’s fucked up.

If you’re looking for a thriller that you could read in one sitting if you had the time because you just need to know how it’s going to end, this is it.
