Adored this book. I felt some of the fantasy world building that was lacking in Divine Rivals was compensated for in this book. I thought it was tense and full of action and suspense however it was not as emotive and stirring (maybe just because the budding typewriter romance of the first book was so heart fluttering and made me blush). Something was lacking. This book was far from falling flat mostly because Ross describes scenes with such devastatingly beautiful imagery. Her descriptions are heart wrenching and spellbinding. There are so many quotes I bookmarked.

Still, I feel there was some loose ends and unanswered questions. I also thought the
deaths of Forest and Sarah were not necessary or meaningful to the plot. Iris has dealt with enough death and trauma. Whereas the death of her mother was deeply moving and stirring and contributed to her character development (and arguably pushed the plot froward by strengthening her resolve) these two deaths  felt inconsequential.

Also, Dacre has the audacity to go off on Roman for being in love with Iris when he essentially started a war because his lover betrayed him? Not a very moving reason….and, he didn’t have an inkling that Roman was betraying him? The Graveyard storyline also didn’t feel fully flushed out. A lot of things were resolved rather abruptly

Loved this book but the motives for the war were not that enticing or powerful to me. Two Gods acting like bitter teenagers. I was satisfied with the ending but it wasn’t as gripping as the first book.

This was a tense conclusion to the book Divine Rivals. I found it incredibly slow and hard to read, but this is not due to the quality of writing. I found this book so slow due to the absolute panic and stress I maintained throughout its entirety that something bad would happen to Iris and Roman. They are so precious to me and this book had me afraid to finish it on the chance that it would break my heart.

I do wish that there was more of a
final showdown with Dacre at the end, and it also felt like a strange cop out to have Enva unable to help or leave the city limits.
I also wish that we
saw more of Attie & Tobias, as well as Marisol & Keegan. The deaths of Forrest and Prindle were upsetting to me as well, mainly concerning Prindle since Forrest kind of sucks imo after he dragged Iris away from Roman in Divine Rivals.

This book will absolutely have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I recommend reading this on a weekend where you have the time to cope with the inevitable anxiety that will ensue.

This was more world development than character romance, so I understand people who didn't like it. But for me, it was a beautiful story (also sad) Although I liked Divine Rivals more.

💌“Write me a story where there is no ending, Kitt. Write to me and fill my empty spaces.”

“I betrayed you,” Roman began, “because I love her.” (…) “You never saved me, like you claim. In the field of Avalon Bluff. You didn’t save me, but Iris did.”💌

Spoilers ahe
„I betrayed you,” Roman began, “because I love her.“

After binge reading the first book in one sitting because it just was so good, it took me so long to finish this one. It was one of my most anticipated reads because of the first book but it wasn’t really it (for me). The Plot was captivating but also predictable at the same time.
I honestly didn’t really care about the plot especially after Roman got his memory’s back.
But it still was an amazing read. (Just not as good as the first book)

Rebecca Ross writing style is a 10/10, love it so much.
I really really enjoyed the dual povs and even more the letters.

Then I also love love love the characters.
Roman and Iris love story is too good,
I mean they found each other again and again. And I was so glad that they got the happy ending they deserved.
I also love Attie and Tobias. And of course Marisol and Keegan, although i wish Marisol would have appeared more often.
I cried multiple times because this book hit hard, especially the ending.

I just have one question left (maybe I didn’t pay enough attention when reading) but what happened to Keegan and Marisol?
Is keegan the new chancellor?? (I really hope so)

„Keep writing. You will find the words you need to share. They are already within you, even in the shadows, hiding like jewels. —C.”
I look forward to the next chapter. The one you will write in your story, as well as the one we write together.
Love, Iris“
