The ending is lovely. The middle really dragged for me. There were brief moments of poetic writing and emotional heft. But so much of this wasn’t engaging me. I made myself finish it because so many fans speak so warmly and highly of this book and the two books of this series. But I still don’t think it’s one I’ll recommend.

Vibes: Ww2 and blitz. The vendetta aftermath again Dacre’s army really reminds me of the horrors of war (eg soviet solidera brutal treatment of German speaking civilians in late stages of ww2)

The gods and magic didn’t really make sense to me. The cosy Miyazaki vibes of the magic in ordinary houses and objects was appealing but doesn’t really manifest or follow through. The gods got a bit derivative of the Greek pantheon for me (ichor). Perhaps there is a prequel or  series of short stories that Ross had in mind.

The Alouette and Lt Shane. Missing opportunity of adversity if the unused typewriter wasn’t destroyed.

Spoilers ahe
„I betrayed you,” Roman began, “because I love her.“

After binge reading the first book in one sitting because it just was so good, it took me so long to finish this one. It was one of my most anticipated reads because of the first book but it wasn’t really it (for me). The Plot was captivating but also predictable at the same time.
I honestly didn’t really care about the plot especially after Roman got his memory’s back.
But it still was an amazing read. (Just not as good as the first book)

Rebecca Ross writing style is a 10/10, love it so much.
I really really enjoyed the dual povs and even more the letters.

Then I also love love love the characters.
Roman and Iris love story is too good,
I mean they found each other again and again. And I was so glad that they got the happy ending they deserved.
I also love Attie and Tobias. And of course Marisol and Keegan, although i wish Marisol would have appeared more often.
I cried multiple times because this book hit hard, especially the ending.

I just have one question left (maybe I didn’t pay enough attention when reading) but what happened to Keegan and Marisol?
Is keegan the new chancellor?? (I really hope so)

„Keep writing. You will find the words you need to share. They are already within you, even in the shadows, hiding like jewels. —C.”
I look forward to the next chapter. The one you will write in your story, as well as the one we write together.
Love, Iris“
