Like a lot of people, I picked this up after reading Alison Bechdel's book Are You My Mother? where it is cited heavily as she examines the complexities underpinning her relationship with her mother. A great feature of this book is that it speaks to high-functioning people who are "fine" and often cite a "happy childhood" without recognising the subtle ways in which their relations with their parents, while not abusive or traumatic, have shaped their ways of living, loving and communicating. Basically, our parents fuck us up, and the sooner you understand exactly how you have been fucked up, the happier and freer you can be. Like lots of psychotherapy books of this era, some of it will feel dated or irrelevant, but the bits that spoke to me REALLY spoke to me.

Thanking the divine that I read this before becoming a parent.

Wish everyone did.
