Can’t think of anything about this book that I didn’t love. Martha Ballard is one of my favorite characters I’ve ever read - what a freaking badass. Beautifully written with atmospheric descriptions that make you feel like you’re in the scene. Loved the dialogue and banter. The love story between her and her husband was so sweet. A satisfying mystery. Super palatable representation of the late 1700s period. Just an excellent story!

I read the book, but gave up at 35% as I didn't like the strident voice I attached to the main character.  Later my book club picked it and I tried again via the audiobook.  That was a winning strategy.  I found myself engaged far more and found the story so interesting.

I loved this book! Martha Ballard is a bad ass!! I loved how she cared for her community and advocated for them. I also loved her relationship with her husband and children. This book was beautifully written! It made me want to continue writing in my journal! MUST READ!!
