GwG book club.  This book was so engaging, I really enjoyed it. The author's notes at the end are also helpful. I'll definitely read more of this author.

Wow. What an incredible book. I finished reading the authors note and closed the book and just hugged it for awhile. There was a quote in this that said “labor may render every woman a novice but pregnancy renders every woman a child” and it really hit hard for me. Hearing about the different childbirth scenarios in this was so riveting and painful and real. The injustice and ANGER I felt throughout the other plot line was palpable. I’d love to read more about Martha Ballard and I’m glad this book brought me to her.

I wanted to like this book more, but it was slow and a bit too long. It was not a page turner and I felt myself pushing through. I can appreciate the real life Martha and the accounts of midwifery and childbirth (women are badasses!), but I expected more a fast-paced thriller with a whodunnit plot line to be at the center of the book.

In historical small town America women have virtually no rights. When a woman is raped in a small town the midwife is one of the only witnesses. The word of a woman isn't worth much and it's worth nothing if her husband isn't there to allow her to testify.

Leading up to court one of the men is found dead. He was hanged and his body thrown into the river. Martha isn't like most women. She experienced terrible things in her life and she is willing to risk it all to help others.

This was such a good book. A reminder of the terrible treatment of women back in the old days. A look at what one woman is willing to sacrifice in order to help those around her. The secrets that women keep and what they do with them. A look at one woman who was able to lift up those around her with the respect of her husband.
