This year is getting off to a great start, as this is another five-star read! This book had so many intriguing elements of life in 1790s Maine. The story of the midwife, her family, her community, the early justice system, and the murder mystery that opens the book makes for a compelling book— I loved it!

I… I’ve never read a book like this before. Murder mystery by also walking through the life of a woman near forgotten. This book was near impossible to put down, and I had to pry myself away from it often. During parts of it, I thought I would put in a lower rating due to it taking a bit to get to the murder mystery solution (I like results quickly… what can I say…). I am glad that I didn’t. This book was written perfectly, and tied up all loose ends. It gave me my solution and closure, while giving a form of justice to those who deserve it. I often recommend books to friends because they are good. This book is not good… it is perfect and an experience that needs to be had.
