Despite some major content warnings, this book was absolutely wonderful. Based on a true story of a midwife, Lawhon spun the story around 18th century laws, courts, challenges, misogyny, even modes of transportation. I learned a ton about the time period, and felt myself cheering for Martha the whole way through. Great read!

I really, really wanted to love this one. It was fine. I enjoyed it overall, but it was slowww. I had a hard time getting into it, and there were so many characters to keep track of! I do appreciate the historical accuracy of the novel, and the ending--even though not historically accurate or very plausible, it was satisfying to see some justice.

Overall, I liked the book, but I found it forgettable. It isn't one that will stay with me.

I put it down a few times to finish other books because the early pacing was slow - I think the fact that I read it on audio helped propel me forward. Once I was in though I was IN. I found the author's note really helpful to contextualize her decisions around how she engaged with issues of race, colonialism, and the medical turn of birth.

A fantastic historical fiction about a little known woman in American history. I found the descriptions of the legal process off the time prior to the revolutionary war interesting, and the legal system’s treatment toward women enraging. Lawhon did her homework and provides an insightful author’s note at the end of the book.

It starts slowly but the pace picks up! LOTS of characters to keep track of; she should have a cast list in the front.
