This is such a brilliantly written book, totally captivating, can’t put down amazing!!

More like 2.5 stars.
This book has the most toxic, detestable, horrible and depressing character I have ever read about. I cannot say I enjoyed reading this book - it was a very depressing experience and unpleasant to read - yet it did one thing well, which is the impact it has on the people around her and I did like that aspect of the book.

This is probably one of my favourite reads of 2022. It’s funny, sarcastic, emotional, heavy at times and such a beautiful story.

I really saw myself in Martha - from her dry sense of humour to her struggles with just getting through life and seeing how everything came together in her story was really hopeful.

I’ll definitely be reading this one again and again and again.

3.5 rounded up. I did actually love this book, and I know the author's (completely intentional) decision to not name Martha's mental illness was controversial but for me it worked. In its lack of specificity I think it actually felt more specific - how women's diagnoses are largely mishandled and considered through the lens of their potential motherhood or relationships to others less than their individual selves. The dialogue in this book is genuinely funny and heartwarming in a way that's hard to find. I know it's awful to say this but at times I was so frustrated with her desire to blame, blame, blame that I didn't want to read the story from her perspective anymore, but I think the ending was rewarding without being too convenient. I'd definitely recommend if it's your sort of thing.

*Audio

Heartbreaking account of a life lived with mental illness, tempered by humor. Martha is hard to like but at much of the time easy to empathize with.

*Excellent narration. Emilia Fox is a new favorite.
