The cover says charming and funny. That must be a misprint. Sad, emotional, mental illness, loss.

I have so many feelings for this book. The raw honesty of the main character and her struggles, the low swings she experiences and the absolute shame of her actions after she comes out of them resonate too hard.

The relationship between Martha and Patrick was heartbreaking as we kept going through bittersweet memories of them falling in love, the juxtaposition of the same things that Martha fell in love with and what she hates most about Patrick was so interesting.

I do feel like the book fell short of the mental health and coping with pain topic, and I think it's partially because the process and illness was fictional. I was.... Disappointed at the lost opportunity for representation at the big reveal of the illness, and then even more disappointed about how Martha shifted her mindset to 'it wasn't my fault..... It was the --' (I swear to God if I see the -- things again I'm gonna GRRRR). And for the most part, I understood why Martha felt despair in her life, but a few select moments made the angst go a bit over the top, such as the comments from the tattoo artist re:pain (has the author ever gotten a tattoo before...?)

All in all, enjoyable read, definitely highlighted a lot of sections as I was blown away by the dialogue, but some of the themes and levels of realism of the story didn't.... Match?
