So like...I wasn't expecting to give this a 4 stars but CAWPILE doesn't lie I guess. I feel like it is more a 3.5/5
The biggest problem I had with this book is the lacking relationship development between Isa and Eva. There were some big trauma hints from Isa that she might not be such a bloodthirsty and conniving bitch at all but then it'd be like it never happened and she was back to wanting to murder Eva out of pure Anakin-dark side hatred. This could also be said for the mother.
In saying this, I almost didn't check if this series had a second book and screamed "IS THAT HOW IT REALLY ENDS?! ON A CLIFFHANGER WITH MAJOR QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED ABOUT BELOVED AKETO?!" (who is a total snack btw, would love to see a live adaptation of him somewhere or some thirsty fan art). In saying that, there is a 2nd book and I'll be buying it this very second cause of have to know this big secret Miss Joy. Also, I assume (or hope) that a lot of character relationship development is explored in the 2nd book.
I kept feeling unmotivated to pick it back up when I had to put it down for something but when I did pick it back up I'd spend hours devouring it.

I finished this book in 4 days! I love books that have rivalry in them! The two sisters Isa and Eva must fight for the crown. Their mother could not have been a better character with her I only have my favorite daughter and want her to win. As Eva gets closer to her 17th birthday there are people trying to harm her and she is trying to figure out who. She visits her father to get answers but only gets a few before tragedy strikes again. The night of her 17th things really take a turn and is absolutely worth the read to find out exactly what happens, who was behind it all and how Eva can save herself from her mother and sister. I definitely recommend this book, I was on the edge of my seat the whole book!

The characters and the supposed rivalry for the the crown kept me at arms length throughout despite the magick.

3,5 stars but gave it 4 because I feel like this has a lot of potential.
The world building, magic system and general plot line was entertaining. It was definitely one of those books you didn’t want to put down once you’ve started. My only complaint would be that personally I felt like some of the characters introduced were not fully developed, as there was so much we didn’t learn about them. Sure the first person narrative meant that the book focused on the protagonist, but some more insight in the side characters would have been nice. But considering this isn’t a standalone I suppose that can be expected. I loved the elements of tales and mythology of the world created, they were written beautifully. Definitely a good start for a series, hopefully many of the things not addressed here will be in the next one! The general idea and message behind it is quite nice. Worth a try.

“To become numb to violence was to forget to cherish life.”
Io sono una persona pignola e questo libro è un' occasione sprecata. La trama è pure interessante, sebbene già ritrovata in almeno altri 10 libri solo nell'ultimo anno, non ha grossi problemi a livello di lettura, il libro scorre bene, però è vuoto di contenuti intriganti e scorre anche troppo bene visto che arrivi a 50 pagine dalla fine e la cosa più avvincente che è avvenuta è l'assassinio del padre. Ci sono cose che non hanno senso, o sono state volutamente rese poco chiare, perché sono state messe li perché serviva un qualcosa, una situazione, che smuovesse la storia, e altre cose che sarebbero dovute essere spiegate ma che vengono lasciate li così.
♠ Conosciamo la nostra protagonista, Evaline, mentre di nascosto in piena notte si dirige nella parte nord della capitale, nel settore dei bloodkin (si si, vampiri), dove c'è quella che è praticamente una sagra di paese, si balla, si mangia, c'è la maGGia e tutti sono sbronzi, peccato che questa festa sia illegale. Lei va, a volto scoperto perché come dice lei stessa nessuno la riconosce, ha senso, chisselaincula la principessa, vuoi che la gente sappia che aspetto abbia una potenziale erede al trono? 'Sti cazzi. Quindi lei gira per la sagra, beve, balla con tutti, piagnucola un po' su quanto la sua vita sia ingiusta perché deve morire, finché non incrocia lo sguardo dell'ultimo ballerino e si rende conto che è una guardia, quest'uomo tanto per cominciare la guarda in modo assolutamente lercio come se la conoscesse e volesse farle cosacce brutte, però poi sembra non riconoscerla perché lei, spaventata e incazzatissima con lui per non si sa quale motivo, scappa tra la gente e lui non cerca di seguirla. Ma seri? La guardia non riconosce la principessa che non solo non è mascherata, ma gli stava a 10 centimetri dalla faccia? Mettiamo caso che pure lui fosse ubriaco.
La sera dopo Eva ritorna alla festa. Credo sia la notte successiva perché non c'è nulla che indichi il passare del tempo, non si sa quanto tempo passi dall'inizio alla fine del libro, ma siccome non viene detto che del tempo è passato, presumo sia la sera successiva. Torna a questa festa illegale e viene quasi ammazzata da un assassino. Ora, non sapremo mai se queste due cose sono collegate, non mi pare di ricordare che lei riveda o nomini mai di nuovo quella guardia ma forse, dico forse, sta festa non è così sicura come pensavi. Oltretutto la prima sera c'è stato anche un raid delle guardie che hanno disperso i partecipanti, ed Eva dice che ogni due o tre giorni le guardie arrivano alla festa e fermano tutto. Ma cheeee!? Ma almeno finisci il discorso, cosa fanno, arrestano la gente? Sequestrano cose? Ma poi sta festa illegale illegale, tutti sanno che ci sta!? La gente si droga a 'sta sagra. Questa non è una festa, è un rave.
♠Ad un certo punto, al momento dello scontro tra Eva e Isa, la sorella le dice che lei è mezza Khemir perché suo padre è Khemir ed Eva scoppia a piangere, non è che le dice, che ne sai, chi te l'ha detto, da quanto lo sai? No, fa due pianti. E la cosa peggiore è che non sospetta neanche per un secondo che sia tutta una bugia. Per lei è vero, non pensa che la sorella le sta dicendo una cazzata, no, oro colato. Ma vuoi almeno dubitare un po'!?
Tra l'altro, lei è una principessa, sa che dovrà scontrarsi a morte con sua sorella e c'ha i pensieri brutti, ora cercano pure di ammazzarla quindi è diventata leggermente paranoica e tutti gli tengono i segreti. La domestica, il Dio Cane (asdfghjkl lol), il capitano delle sue guardie, il padre, tutti. E tra questi segreti c'è il fatto che le hanno sigillato parte della magia, quella Khemir, perché quando è nata c'è stata l'eclissi e questa qui per tutta la vita non è mai riuscita ad usare i poteri che avrebbe dovuto allenare per battere la sorella. Il padre ha cercato in lungo e in largo qualcuno che potesse insegnarle ad usare la magia ma quando ha visto che il tempo scorreva non poteva dire, tesoro mio ho fatto una cazzata e t'ho sigillato i poteri? Dei fenomeni, cazzo.
♠ Non voglio nemmeno scrivere nient'altro, Baccha è una copia scialba di Magnus Bane e tra Eva e Aketo c'è praticamente insta-love perché lui è bellissimo, ha una pelle ambrata e degli occhi particolari e quando questi due si sono baciati io sono caduta dalle nuvole perché nella testa dell'autrice quelle interazioni tra loro erano flirt ma a me non sembravano. Poi voglio dire, poco telefonato il fatto che lei fosse legata ai Khemir, con tutta la storia che Aketo è un principe Khemir e lei una semplice umana e non potranno mai stare insieme quindi non possono amarsi, devono stare lontani, va beh.
Ridicolo lo scambio di battute tra lei e la madre al funerale. Lei accusa la madre, che l'ha sempre odiata, di aver sempre preferito la sorella e la madre fa l'offesa e si giustifica dicendo che ha scelto la sorella perchè è la primogenita. Che cazzo di motivazione è!? Perchè hai fatto due figlie, allora!?
È tutto così ridicolo.
Però due stelle perché almeno non mi ha ammorbato come altri.

I really liked this book, it is YA fiction, the characters are very engaging and it's a good story line, that gallops along with lots of clever plot lines.
