This is such a powerful story and it’s translation to a graphic novel was almost flawless. However, it was quite obvious in several spreads that the images were simply stills taken from the animated film. This didn’t diminish the strength of the story, but I think I would have preferred to have either read the novel or seen the movie.

Heart-rending but also too rushed.

This was a very touching and heart-wrenching book. Certainly a story that needed to be told about the struggles of women in Afghanistan in the 90's. I remember hearing how hard things had become there when I was young and America sent soldiers to fight there. I salute the publisher for tackling this topic. My only complaint about this book was that the word balloons were in a font that caused some awkward reading at times. There were some words that ran into other words or were spaced awkwardly. But this is a minor thing since the story was so good.
