Everything was great. Love the story, romance, plot twists. All of it was well thought-out and the MC is so likable, I was rooting for her since chapter one.

First couple of chapters were a bit slow for my preference but it picked up quickly after that and the relaxed and matter of fact way sexuality/race/gender is approached is great to read. Non of those factors were defining parts of the characters and were just naturally part of them.

I loved the mix of tense action and emotional moments, and the mythology mixed with real life was really well executed.

I preferred Bayron's phasing and style in Cindrella is Dead, but I did enjoy her take on more modern world. This book warmed up to me a bit slower as well - possibly due to how rarely I read books set in our modern world, even in magical realism sense, and due cultural distance (I am not North American). But after a third or so in I started really enjoying the glimpses into the characters life and the immense amount of representation this book has. The characters are lovable, the descriptions are beautiful and the lore interesting. The attraction between mc and love interest is quite instant which won't be to everyone's tastes.

Overall it was a pleasant read and I am excited to read the sequel.

I liked this more than the last book I read by this Colorado local author (Cinderella is Dead)! I enjoyed Briseis's plant power, having adopted moms, and the overall feel of the story. In the last 10%, it did drop back into the overly dramatic and mostly unbelievable style that I disliked in her other book. This was recently featured in a Rainbow Crate Book Box, which is a major factor in why I read it!

Wow! What a fantastic read...and one I'm glad I read after book two has already been released 😅

Before starting this book I really had no idea what kind of story it was going to be, I knew that the main character had an affinity for plants but that's about it.

So we meet Briseis who was adopted as a baby by two amazing moms who've loved and supported her through everything...even the strange affinity she has with plants. I mean they opened a floral business, named after her, so that she could have a safe place to be near and work with plants.

Always needing to be hyper-vigilant to ensure no one outside of their little family finds out about her affinity...has led to a pretty isolating way of life. The few friends Briseis attempted to have never seemed fully comfortable around her when plants started acting abnormally so she never felt like she could truly express or explain herself.

Out of nowhere a mysterious estate lawyer shows up and says "hey, so you're aunt...oh you didn't know you had one?...well anyways she left you a family estate. Here are the keys and a few letters. Have fun!"

We get to go along with Briseis as she uncovers the rich and mysterious history of her birth family as she tries to learn more about her connection to plants and what it all might mean.

This was such a fun read! The first half of the book felt a bit longer than it needed to be but that second half felt like a whirlwind! I LOVED how we got so many mythology crumbs as Briseis was diving deeper and deeper into her bio-families history.

I look forward to getting my hands on This Wicked Fate so I can find out what more Briseis has to uncover.
