Makes for timely and thrilling pandemic reading.

This was a lovely read, especially with the experience of having lived through a pandemic. I feel as if Camus’ descriptions of mankind’s interaction with such a threatening event are both harrowing at points, as well as incredibly optimistic and cheerful. The characters and general populace, throughout the book, are written in such an intriguing manner. Their muted hopefulness and simultaneous indifference (assumably), is such an interesting dichotomy to read about. I loved the optimism of the book’s conclusion and ultimate thesis,
that mankind ultimately, in its nature, has more to admire than to scorn. In a world with so much pessimism regarding the nature of man, I feel as if this is a beautiful reminder as to the valiant nature that many may exhibit in times of strife. In fact, we, ourselves may attest to the many great things that man is capable of accomplishing in the face of such ailments and struggles. The labours of our healthcare workers, and the collaborative efforts of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic were similar in nature to many of the things Camus discussed, such as the indifference of the people as time progresses, or small things like panic and purchasing useless items. The great emphasis on separation from emotion and people is also fascinating, and was truly enjoyable.

I also found the book’s presentation, through a collective account of past events, a lovely one. The different insights provided from the varying perspectives of characters was written in a unique and fascinating way, and I greatly enjoyed how the story progressed.

Slowly paced, but incredibly gripping. I have always been excited by fictional plagues and diseases, and this book delivers! I also love the prose and syntax of this piece, progressing through the perspectives of those involved.

Overall, there are many things to find impressive with this piece, and I truly did enjoy it. The book, overall, is a lovely discussion on the nature of man in times of crisis and overall narrative. Highly recommend.
