“I have things on my mind,” I said. “Morelli is coming home tomorrow.”
“And?” (R)
“I’m feeling guilty. He doesn’t know I’ve been staying here.”
“Do you feel guilty because he doesn’t know or because you like staying here?” (R)
“Both,” I said.
“Then I don’t see where you have a problem. Give him his dog back and tell him you’re living with me.” (R)
“I can’t do that. I’m in a committed relationship with him.” (S)
“Where’s the commitment? Is he going to marry you?” (R)
“Maybe someday.” (S)
“Maybe never,” Ranger said. “And you can do better.”
“Really? Who’s better than Morelli and is willing to marry me? Name one person.” (S)
“Me,” Ranger said.
(RIGHT ABOUT HERE IS WHERE MY HEART STUTTERED AND I THOUGHT I WAS A GONER!)
His eyes held mine, unblinking. The ultimate poker face. I didn’t have much of a poker face, but I was pretty good at recognizing a bluff.
“Ok,” I said, “when?”
“Saturday,” he said. “You and me. Vegas.”
“I can’t do Saturday. I already have to walk down the aisle in a hideous grey bridesmaid dress. How about Monday?” (S)
“I have a full day of meetings on Monday. Wednesday might work for me.” (R)
“Fine, as long as this Plover problem has been taken care of by then.” (S)
He put the smoothie on the counter. “Understood. We have an engagement. Would you like a ring? I have a safe full of Plover’s finest.”
Brain freeze. Was it possible that I actually just got engaged to Ranger? Was I happy? Confused? Terrified? Aroused? All of the above?
“A ring isn’t immediately necessary,” I said.
“I’m glad to hear that. because I have a better way to celebrate the occasion. It’s bedtime.” (R)
Oh boy.
SQUEEEEEEEE!
I do think I’m going to have to restart this. I wish I knew I could get it done today but we are so short at work… anyway.
(At the end of the book Janet shares some of her favorite quotes, and it made me realize we haven’t seen Sally Sweet for a loooong time. I’ve been thinking about Mooner off and on the last couple books, expecting him to show up, but he hasn’t either. Simon Diggery is in this one though, I do like him.)
Morelli is out of town for a trial so Stephanie’s got Bob. And after Lula’s place is firebombed (not the only one in this book…), she’s got Lula as well. Since that works out about as well as we all expected, Steph vacates her place and heads to Ranger.
I’m not entirely sure how Plover and his jewelry even becomes a thing. I do know Stephanie, her mom, and Grandma Mazur do their own stake out, and Helen rips the mirrors off her Camry trying to follow dude on his motorcycle, but I can’t remember why they’re watching this particular guy, lol. Def need to listen again.
Okay, def a solid addition.

When Stephanie and Lula drive to Maine, I can’t help but crack up because last year (June 2023) my boyfriend and I drove from SW Indiana to MetLife Stadium near East Rutherford NJ for an Ed Sheeran concert; we also spent a day in lower Manhattan. But, the destination was Maine. We spent a week in a cabin on a lake. We drove specifically for the concert in NJ. 13 hours the first leg. When we left NJ to finish the way to Maine and the GPS said 8-9 hours, I immediately booked one way flights home 😂 we were in a rental so it worked out. So I know just about the exact path Stephanie and Lula went, and how terrriiiibllleeeeee it was.
But I’m going out so this’ll have to wait.

I just can’t, the dialogue is so terrible
Loved the ending! Can't wait for the next one!
Another fabulous book in this series. I can't wait for the next one. The mystery was fun and the hijinks were fabulous as usual. I was cracking up at Lulu's and Grandma Mazur. Ranger's "Babe" was perfect
Lorelei King's narration was perfect! I love her voices.

This was good as a stand alone...I want to read more, but not sure if I should stay with book 1 or not.
