I love the way that Crafty Cat's story combines a regular school story with fun art and amazing crafts and creativity.

Grade-school main character Birdie has an alter ego named "Crafty Cat" who provides her with creativity and courage to negotiate her way through life. Crafty Cat is not afraid of paper cuts. Her weapons of choice?...patterned papers, swirling string, gloppy glue, twirling tape, shining scissors, and swirling sparkles! I loved how the author drew a comparison to having to stop crafting to go to school as feeling like a "backward metamorphosis...like a beautiful butterfly changing back into a caterpillar."

This is my kind of superhero! Crafty Cat appears when innovation and creativity is needed by Birdie, a second grader. The illustrations are adorable and both crafty cat and Birdie are lovable characters. Crafty Cat is a good reminder that sometimes we need to be our own superhero.

Birdie is just a girl, a girl who bakes cupcakes and goes to school and has BIRTHDAYS. Birdie does have a secret though - she's secretly CRAFTY CAT! A cat who can craft just about anything from just about anything! When Birdie's birthday break surprise is accidentally ruined, she knows just who to turn to to make everything better.
I'm not sure who this book is intended for. It reads like a first to third grade graphic novel, but it's a little disjointed for that. I had no idea that Crafty Cat was a girl and had to go back and re-read a bit before I realized that Birdie and Crafty Cat were the same person. Harper crammed a lot into this one volume - Birdie's secret identity, her birthday, her relationships with her friends/Anya, parents, etc. It was a lot to take in in a little bit of time. While the art was stellar for little girls who love crafts, the writing could be greatly tightened up, focusing on one issue of Birdie's before introducing something else. I like the idea and hope that future volumes are more coherent.

Crafty Cat is the alter ego of Birdie, a little girl who loves to craft. Crafty Cat always knows what to do or say, so Birdie relies on her in sticky situations. Good messages here about dealing with disappointment and figuring out creative solutions to problems. There are also some fun visual surprises that reward observant readers; I particularly liked the tiny rain cloud over the tiny olive. The craft projects at the end are fun, and there's something for all skill levels: from the easy panda necklace to the more advanced Panda Pal. I think this would make a good K-2 book club selection, and you could end the program by doing one of Birdie's projects.
I have to admit, I was a little disappointed that the real main character is a little girl and that Crafty Cat only makes periodic appearances. I wanted an actual cat doing crafty stuff! But I enjoyed it overall and think kids will like it, too. :)

This story was not what I was expecting, but I loved it. crafty Kittens might also enjoy the crafts included at the end of this slim tome.
