Most of this anthology sadly didn’t live up to expectations.

My top 3 stories (that I would love more from) are:
1) First Kill - Victoria Schwann
2) The House of Black Sapphires - Dhonielle Clayton
3) Bestiary - Laura Ruby

I feel like this built up pushing the boundaries a lot more than it did in the end.

I enjoyed a few of them, which is mostly the case for me with a short story collection. I appreciated that they were short and could read one or two in a sitting.

prob closer to 3.5 stars but i’m not allowed to do that

i’m a NOTORIOUS vampire lover… i read this one for V E Schwab’s First Kill, which was definitely my fav in this collection! but i have to admit some of the other stories felt a little lacklustre. i enjoyed reading them, i just wish they’d grabbed me and pulled me in a little more

1 by Tessa Gratton (nonbinary) is interesting, I liked her relationships with the two vampires and I loved the way it was written, with just a little bit revealed at a time. There are wlw and mlw relationships. 4 star

2 by Mark Oshiro (Latinx, nonbinary) is quite slow to start but by the end I was dying for more. It's an incredibly interesting premise based on the need to see your reflection. mlm relationship. 5 star

3 by Dhonielle Clayton (Black) is another one with a slow start but an incredible mythology that I would love to see more of. The MC is black and bi, with mlw relationship. 5 star

4 by Rebecca Roanhorse (Black, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo) also had an interesting mythology, calling vampires by singing a song. It also wrapped up very nicely. MC is native and gay. 4 star

5 by Julie Murphy (bisexual) I LOVED and would love to see a longer version. I love Julie Murphy's style of writing where she makes everything very clear. White characters are described as being white and the MC is unapologetically fat, and there's no poetic descriptions that you have to think about to realize this, it's just plainly stated. wlw relationship

Must admit Ive had this on my TBR for a good while and only picked it up now to read First Kill before the show comes out tomorrow. It was a good choice as now I'm even more excited for the show, especially knowing how involved the author was. Give my sapphic vampires anytime.

Overall in this collection a couple were 4 or 4.5 stars but some let it down overall so I've averaged it to a 3 star. Its a nice diverse set but some just miss the mark for me. I think there will be at least one or two in here that please everyone!
