I enjoyed this book!! I was right there with all the women. It just outlines a lot of the bullshit woman must put on the line for societal pressures while receiving anything back. It took me a while to digest the last portion-- 2016. It made an impact and made me realize how grave it is--
she just became another statistic and yet nothing is changed :(

Truly a book to recommend for others to gain another perspective. Thank you to Cho Namjoo for writing this book.

The book captures the essence of feminism in its simplest form— all while narrating the sensitive phases of a woman’s life meaningfully. The writing provides readers an accessible range of social movements and ideologies.

I liked how the flow of the storyline was written in a comfortable pace. The book covers the journey of womanhood. In the position of the second gender, you’re taken through situations of an overwhelming sense that leave you feeling helpless.

It felt as though the end of the book was rushed but I have no other complaints. This book is a great eye opener and conversation starter for readers of all ages (given that they’re aware of the trigger warnings.) The theme allows people to look at the world not as it is, but how it could be.

An important book about gender inequality, that is sadly still relevant everywhere in the world. Reading half like a memoir, half like a social sciences paper (as if the author had to back her writing up with statistics and facts from scientific articles in case people would not believe her descriptions of gender discrimination), this book points out how gender inequality continues to permeate modern society and is ingrained into the minds of even those who mean well. The main character was really passive most of the time which I guess in this case is a symptom of oppression but I felt like she could've shown a little more agency, but the mom had a great character arc.

I understand the hype and praise this book receives due to it’s excellent commentary of the casual misogyny and sexism that a South Korean woman will experience throughout their lifetime, which is loosely based on the author’s experience within this society.

The choice to explore this narrative throughout the duration of Kim Jiyoung’s life, from birth to marriage and motherhood, was a clever one since the audience gets to understand and realise that these experiences are not one off circumstances but a casual and frequent occurrence as a woman living in South Korea.

However, where I find the novel falls flat is creating an engaging plot and loveable characters who you can empathise with since towards the later half of the novel, I found myself putting the book down frequently and being disappointed with the conclusion of the book -  and with the ending, I wish that was further explored
with the narrator of the story being exposed as Kim Jiyoung’s psychologist, I only wanted to hear more from what the psychologist had to say on Kim Jiyoung’s mental wellbeing and how the sexism she has experience had affected her and how she’ll get treated as an exploration of mental health in South Korea and it’s negative stigma.

Overall, this book discusses the nuances and experiences that a South Korean woman will experience throughout their lifetime and its very real consequences.
