i want to scream forevermore. this was so excruciatingly and painfully amazing and true and familiar that i need to pull my hair out.
especially ESPECIALLY the ending.. the psychiatrist seeing the same issues in his wife as jiyoung but STILL DECIDING HE NEEDS TO HIRE AN UNMARRIED WOMAN NEXT TIME AAAAAAHHHHH I NEED TO SCRATCH MY EYES OUT like he knows but he doesn’t understand.. even jiyoung’s husband knew but did nothing to help.. and there’s no current solution to the problems women face in the workplace (can you feel my anger?? oh my god)
although this is set in south korea,  the issues are felt worldwide for women/fem-presenting people- though i understand they are definitely different depending on which country you’re in. it was really enlightening to read experiences of misogyny from another part of the world. this was amazing. i loved it. i hated it. i understood it. it understood me. aaaaaahhhhhh. “the doctor chuckled to himself. 'back in the day, women used clubs to do the laundry, lit fires to boil baby clothes, and crawled around to do the sweeping and mopping. don’t you have a washing machine for laundry and vacuum cleaner for cleaning? women these days- what have you got to whine about?'”

I learned a lot but found the ending unsatisfying.

I liked this book a lot, very emotional but informative. I have some complaints, though. Its translation to English is a bit stiff, and sometimes I have to put the book down to work through what they’re trying to say. It’s also in British English but I didn’t mind that. The other thing was the synopsis made it seem like the psychosis was going to be the main focus, but it really wasn’t. The psychosis is MAYBE 10% of the book, the rest is a dive into Jiyoung’s life growing up as a woman in Korea.
I think the book should have advertised itself as a story about misogyny and the difficulty women in Korea face, because that was the main content of the book. I still liked it but I thought the synopsis was misleading. Fun short read.
