I like the concept for this plot, however...
There's an event at the school that's hyped up for half the book that would have been super cool to read about. Instead we get one chapter about it that is practically begging us to hate the love interest.
The dialogue and all around writing is just SO cheesy. Which is cool if that's what you're going for. But this is like hallmark max level. And its just not what teenagers sound like. I don't know how to explain it other than it felt so incredibly millennial (which I assume the author is so, fair, plus its half a decade old so, fair). Just not my thing I suppose.
The ending was really rushed and all of this blame was put on the MC that just really didn't make sense to me. We also get no exposition for the MCs hometown bff, just "crap I've been meaning to email him" and then .. nothing. And she forgives her other hometown "friend" soo easily (who put her through hell btw) for, what reason exactly?? But your actual good friend who helped you through all that gets nothing? 😭
I was so sure I'd love this book. It was all there, but the plot holes and weird pacing just didn't work for me. I would be interested in seeing where this author goes a few years out, because I think she has good ideas. Maybe I just need to read the non-YA stuff. I won't give up on you yet, Rachel Hawkins.

i really enjoyed this for the sapphic boarding school romance plus a literal princess vibes. it's nothing i'm going to lose sleep over, but it was very solid. the characters were good, though the transition from "flora is a terrible person" to "flora and i are good friends and maybe more" was a bit rushed imo. also it ended a bit abruptly. i thought i made a mistake when i turned the page and saw acknowledgements. i wanted more from the ending. but it was fun and easy and light. and it's about time sapphics get lesbian princess romances.

I wish Flora's change of behaviour when around Millie would've been more gradual, but either way i love the mean blonde rich closeted lesbian trope so that was still a slay for me
also !! Jude was horrible to Millie, so I felt like them going back to being friends so abruptly was a bit, idk, weird ? anyways, Jude should've redeemed herself better bc she had been a real asshole.
also no way perry is straight sorry. His name is literally Peregrine
This book is very lighthearted, so I completely get why they wouldn't want to touch upon more serious homophobia (and I am all for not having queer characters suffer homophobia at all), but I did find it funny how none of the tabloids or the people seemed to be homophobic against Flora, except for her parents, and they were never shown being it directly. Sign that times are changing, maybe ? :) At least in the story !!

the chemistry between the main characters dwindled as the book went on, but it was still cute. there were no stakes and sometimes that's what you want in a casual read. sapphics at boarding school will always reign supreme
