great plot, great character development. however, description is a literary tool, and using it incorrectly will hurt a story. dreiser could have cut 500 pages of unnecessary description from this book and it would have improved the story.

similar to The Great Gatsby in some ways. In fact, I liked this one better. Of course, it's about 10x longer.

An American Tragedy starts slow, and like the boulder behind Indiana Jones, slowly but surely creeps up on you.

The pace is slow, the writing is old-fashioned-y, but in the end, a worthwhile and enjoyable read:

I listened to the audiobook. Good lord, this is a 34 hour listen. It's okay, but there's more detail than needed at times. At other times, it seems to attempt a "memory" type passage, but it's just a repeat of previous information.
