He's definitely a good writer in my opinion. As someone who is hard-of-hearing, he does a great job of describing some of the emotions that come with losing your hearing as well as what's physically happening to your cochlea. Very insightful since it helps you make sense of what's happening to your body.
That being said, I was really thrown off at all the parts where he's discussing his experiences with women. It gets to the point of being uncomfortable, at least for me. I understand this is about feeling more human when once you felt disconnected, but I just felt like it was so oddly out of place.
There's also too big of an obsession of what makes a cyborg. It's explained so many times and argued what is and isn't one. It was just a little tiring after a while.
Overall though, between the parts that didn't seem to fit, I felt like this book was insightful and helpful from an emotional and physiological standpoint. Worth the read, just be warned that some parts will definitely seem odd.

This was one of the required texts for my disability studies course, and I actually really enjoyed it! Before this book I really had no idea what cochlear implants were or really anything about how we perceive sound. I loved the way he described his experience and I feel I gained some perspective about what hearing impaired people go through. Overall an awesome memoir. I'm glad I was forced to read it!
